The directors of the French New Wave—Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rivette, Resnais—are often celebrated as the architects of its creative revolution. But women in the movement were equally instrumental in driving innovation. Jeanne Moreau, Anna Karina, Jean Seberg, and many lesser-known actresses contributed significantly to modernizing the representation of women both on-screen and off-screen through their groundbreaking performances and unconventional lifestyles. We will trace the evolving images and roles of these New Wave women—from Brigitte Bardot to Delphine Seyrig and filmmaker Agnès Varda—during a period of transformation in France from 1955 to 1968, exploring the encounters and endeavors that shaped their lives and transformed cinema.

No prior knowledge of cinema required. Those who have taken FLM 147: "Exploring French New Wave" will benefit from seeing the movement from a different angle, with different films. All films can be rented or streamed through the Criterion Channel, Netflix, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play Movies, or other online platforms.
