Join us for a hands-on field photography workshop at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Located near the Stanford campus in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this remarkable refuge is known by researchers from all over the world for its geologic, topographic, and biotic diversity. This setting offers us an ideal location to photographically explore a wide range of natural features, from open landscapes, redwood groves, aquatic shorelines and the historic step dam to macro views of local fauna.
We will begin with two on-campus meetings to cover the basics of nature photography. Using iconic examples from respected landscape artists and photographers, we will discuss the compelling use of natural and adjusted light, focal length lenses, macro photography, the daytime use of long shutter speeds using neutral density filters, and other useful hints for our workshop. As we explore Jasper Ridge’s serpentine foothills with our cameras, we will experiment with a variety of techniques to help evolve our personal vision. Two more classroom meetings will follow the field workshop to review and discuss our work.

This course is for students of all levels who wish to expand their shooting skills and develop their sense of photographic vision. Some prior experience with photography and computers may be helpful but is not required. All cameras, including mobile devices, are welcome, although a DSLR-type camera may be more versatile. Field trip transportation will be the responsibility of the student.

Documentary and Fine Art Photographer
Joel Simon studied with Leo Holub and has worked as an editorial and fine art photographer for four decades. He has lectured on more than 65 trips with Stanford’s Travel/Study program.
