Join us for a hands-on field photography workshop in Yosemite National Park in late April. This workshop will explore four different areas of the park with group shoots in the morning and afternoon. There will also be ample free time to explore other areas of the park with our cameras. Before the Yosemite excursion, we will meet twice on campus and once in the field to cover the basics of landscape photography, drawing inspiration from the classic black-and-white works of Ansel Adams and the color photography of Galen Rowell. After the trip, we will meet two more times in the classroom to review student work from the weekend excursion. Using Adams’s concept of previsualization to guide our personal vision, we will cover the landscape principles of composition and camera settings and best practices for sharp image capture, and we will examine photography apps available for planning and processing our landscape photography. Students will be responsible for creating and sharing their work during classroom reviews. You will be exposed to a broad overview of the landscape photography genre and leave with a better understanding of the concepts, tools, and strategies to create beautiful landscape photographs on your own.

This course is open to beginning and intermediate photographers looking to expand their shooting skills and broaden their vision. The course will not focus on individual cameras or brands, so students will be responsible for understanding their own equipment. Students should have access to a digital camera. The instructor will use Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom and the Nik Collection software to process images, but students may use any image-processing software of their choosing. Transportation, lodging, meals, and park entry costs will be the responsibility of the student. Students are strongly urged to reserve lodging in (or near) Yosemite National Park as soon as possible. The instructor recommends the Yosemite View Lodge (stayyosemiteviewlodge.com; 209-379-2681) since it is only a 15-minute drive from the valley floor.
