This course centers on reading comprehension and speaking skills through the short stories of some of Italy’s most iconic yet contemporary authors, including Stefano Benni, Beppe Severgnini, and Geppi Cucciari. The common thread? Humor! These original texts are both entertaining and instructive. Benni, one of Italy’s most prominent contemporary novelists, offers a biting social satire of contemporary society; Severgnini, a columnist for the daily Corriere della Sera and author of sixteen books, explores the nuances of life in modern Italy and compares them to American culture through his sarcastic journalistic style; Cucciari, a writer and stand-up comedian, makes us snicker at her self-deprecating reflections on romantic relationships.

Various support materials, including audiovisuals, will be used to help build your vocabulary and understanding of Italian grammar while offering opportunities to discuss specific issues of cultural and social relevance. We will enhance reading comprehension, cultural intuition, and oral communication skills, all in good fun. By the end of the course, students will understand written Italian with greater sophistication and begin to narrate their own experiences with greater ease—all while having a good laugh.

This second-year course is intended for students who have completed “Beginning Italian III” in Stanford Continuing Studies or its equivalent.

Alessandra De Rose McCarty, Lecturer in Italian, Stanford
