This course is designed for those who have some experience shooting and editing with their iPhone and who want to advance their skills. We will explore a variety of apps that enable us to perform advanced photo editing and creative image creation. In each class session, the instructor will demonstrate new apps and techniques for a particular type of photography, with time at the end for Q&A and optional critiques of your work. We will cover apps that enable precise capture in macro and close-up photography; explore shooting and posing techniques for creating dynamic portraits in formal, environmental, and candid styles; touch on how the Deep Fusion feature reduces noise and improves details; introduce techniques and best practices for HDR photography and Night Mode; and discuss shooting in RAW format to create professional-quality images. Students will leave the course with a wealth of apps and techniques for moving their iPhoneography to a professional-quality level.
Students must complete “Introduction to iPhoneography: Using Your Smartphone to Make Extraordinary Images” (WSP 294 or PHOTO 32) or have comparable experience with an iPhone prior to enrolling in this course. An iPhone 7s Plus or newer is recommended. Portrait mode with Depth Effects and some features demonstrated in the course are available only for the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max and the 11, 12, 13, and 14 series; however, all models of iPhones newer than 7s Plus are welcome, as most of the content will be applicable to every model. Students can expect to spend $20–$40 on apps; most apps offer a free trial and various subscription prices. Accessories demonstrated in class are optional purchases.
