Do you enjoy Japanese culture and food, or have a trip to Japan in your not-too-distant future? Why not study the language? This course is intended for those with little or no previous background in Japanese. Our primary focus will be oral communication and listening skills, although Hiragana and Katakana (two of the three writing systems in Japanese) will also be introduced. Students will master fundamental vocabulary through video and audio listening exercises as well as through in-class conversations. By the end of the course, students will be able to talk about themselves, their family, work, everyday schedules, interests, and food.

Emi Mukai, Lecturer in Japanese, Stanford

Emi Mukai coordinates first-year Japanese courses and teaches advanced Japanese conversation. Mukai is an oral and writing proficiency tester in Japanese, certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). She has taught Japanese at Williams College and received a PhD in linguistics from USC.
