This course is intended for anyone interested in learning the Arabic alphabet and communication skills in Arabic. Instead of emphasizing the complex grammatical and syntactical structure of the language, this course will spotlight useful Arabic words, phrases, and sentences in a way that will equip students to communicate on a basic level with native Arabic speakers. The course will concentrate on using, pronouncing, and understanding Arabic expressions through interaction with fellow students and the instructor.

Ramzi Salti, Lecturer in Arabic Language and Literature, Stanford

Ramzi Salti has taught Arabic at Stanford for twenty years. He received a PhD in comparative literature with a primary emphasis on Arabic literature from UC Riverside. He received the Stanford Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004 and a Knight Favorite Professor Award from the John S. Knight Fellowships Program in 2013. Salti is also the host of Arabology, a radio program about Arabic music and culture.
