Statistics are used everywhere in our professional and personal lives: research, government, business, sports, and media, to name just a few sectors. Why? Because statistics fundamentally allow us to better understand data and draw more intelligent conclusions from information. This course will help students with no prior knowledge of statistics to make sense of the data that they encounter. The course is designed for students who are proficient in basic math, including algebra, but would like to build a stronger foundation in statistics and its applications. It will take a practical approach to statistics, focusing on examples rather than theory. For example, coin flipping, card games, and rolling dice will be used to teach probability. Instruction will be a mix of lectures to introduce concepts, small-group problem-solving, and a walk through real-world examples, including polls and surveys, manufacturing processes, on-time performance, vehicle recalls, and aerospace. Through these examples, students will also develop a critical eye to help them identify when statistics are being used inappropriately. Sampling and probability, descriptive statistics, and discrete and continuous random variables—with a focus on the normal distribution, the central limit theorem, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, correlation, and regression—are the specific topics the course will cover.

Students should have a basic understanding of algebra and of Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet tools like Google Sheets.
