In this course, students will explore cadaver specimens and digital technologies used by Stanford medical students as they prepare for careers in the health sciences and by surgeons in the treatment and care of patients. Though cadaver specimens are the foundation of anatomy instruction at Stanford, digital resources such as the Anatomage 3D Virtual Anatomy Dissection Table and 3D interactive anatomy apps provide the student and practitioner with data for visualizing the spatial relationships between anatomical structures and the full extent of specific anatomy that may be difficult to explore on a cadaver. Ultimately, this leads to a better understanding of anatomy and improved patient care. Students will learn how to identify anatomical structures and common clinical conditions affecting the neck, such as thyroglossal cysts, thyroid nodules, and cancer. Students will also observe, on cadaver specimens, surgical procedures to treat those conditions. The course offers students an insight into the combination of anatomy resources and imaging that makes learning anatomy at Stanford a unique experience.

Karuna Dewan specializes in adult surgeries for swallowing, speaking, and breathing disorders. She has a special interest in the surgical management of dysphagia, rehabilitation after total laryngectomy, and the treatment of chronic cough. She has authored book chapters and published papers and continues to conduct clinical research in these areas, with a focus on swallowing function and quality of life. She serves as a peer reviewer for multiple journals and a committee member within the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. Textbooks for this course:
