This course will offer students an inside look into the San Francisco art market and its inner workings, giving them a chance to visit the San Francisco FOG Design+Art Fair and also the galleries at the Minnesota Street Project, which have become pivotal to the Bay Area art market. Our first session (held in the classroom) will offer an overview of today’s most important contemporary art fairs and explore how they operate, how they select participating galleries, and how the works presented at art fairs reflect current market trends. During our second meeting, we will visit the FOG Design+Art Fair. The session will include a tour of the main booths, a discussion of the most significant artworks, and brief but incisive conversations with gallerists. The third session (back in the classroom) will be devoted to explaining how galleries operate and providing insights on the local art gallery scene and its key actors. The fourth session will feature a visit to galleries on Minnesota Street in San Francisco, revealing how this project is reshaping the local arts scene. In our final session, we will summarize strategies for making future visits to art galleries and fairs, and making wise purchases. Art lovers, novices, and experts alike will gain fresh insights on how to get the most out of visits to galleries and art fairs, as well as how to engage with contemporary art and understand its markets.

Field trip transportation and FOG Design+Art Fair ticket cost will be the responsibility of the student. Grade restricton: No letter grade.
