Having fears is a normal human experience, but often they can interfere with our daily lives and even those things we care about most. This course will cover principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a science-based kind of psychotherapy that is effective for managing thoughts, emotions, and behavior patterns that make people feel trapped.

CBT can teach people who feel anxious in social situations how to identify and label their thoughts (“They’ll make fun of me, it’s going to go terribly”) and restructure them (“I don’t know how they'll react, I might even have fun”) in order to be able to socialize more easily. CBT therapists also can help individuals cope effectively with their fears, and increase the ability to be in the present moment. For example, people who feel anxious in specific situations (such as flying, in enclosed spaces, or around snakes, to name a few) can learn relaxation techniques and behavioral strategies to gradually and voluntarily confront what they fear so it doesn’t interfere with their lives and they can live more mindfully.

In this course, you will learn basic skills used by clinicians that can help you understand your own fears and anxieties. The ultimate purpose of helping people who feel anxious is not to make the fears go away but rather to see that they are able and courageous enough to confront them.

No background in psychology is required.

Axel Valle specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders. He is a trained psychologist and has worked in private practice and taught undergraduate courses at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City. He received a PsyD in clinical psychology from The Wright Institute.
