Could Taiwan spark a war between the United States and China? As tensions escalate between the world’s two superpowers, Taiwan remains the most likely flashpoint for potential conflict. This course examines Taiwan’s pivotal role in the security dynamics of East Asia, from its complex history under Japanese colonial rule to its postwar status. We will explore the US commitment to Taiwan’s defense, Beijing’s long-standing claim that the island is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and the economic and political trends shaping Taiwan’s future. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s geopolitical significance and the broader challenges facing US-China relations in the 21st century.
