You may be one of the millions of people carrying a fairly high-quality camera with you all day long—in the form of a smartphone. Or, perhaps you recently purchased a GoPro or another form of digital camera. You want the videos you create with these devices to look more professional and interesting, but you don’t want to go to film school. This hands-on course will expose you to the basics of planning (how to create a script, a storyboard, and an execution plan for your video); shooting (including lighting, sound, and composing a shot); editing (the academics of good editing and the technical steps to accomplish polished videos); and publishing video for the web (such as on YouTube and Facebook). We will start with a crash course in pre-production and cinematography, and then do hands-on work editing footage. By the end of the course, you will have created a simple, short video and published it online.

Students can use any camera that shoots video (e.g., smartphone, digital camera, tablet, video camera). Students are required to bring a laptop computer to class and encouraged to have it loaded with iMovie or Adobe Premiere Pro.

Digant Kasundra, Founder, Dead Set Films

Digant Kasundra has written and directed six short films, including a 3D black-and-white silent film, The Magic Man, which debuted at the Palm Springs International ShortFest in 2012 and toured across multiple continents. Kasundra is also a film editor, using Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro, and has extensive experience with chroma keying, compositing, visual effects, and post-production using prosumer tools like the Adobe Creative Suite.
