Interested in learning basic botanical drawing techniques from a science illustrator? In this course, we'll begin by looking at examples of botanical illustrations throughout history as well as innovative botanical artwork being produced today. Moving on to an introduction to botanical anatomy, students will learn the names and functions of flower parts. We will then put this knowledge to use as we closely observe flowers. We'll get to know our subject matter further through a flower dissection, where we will look at the individual parts and begin to draw them. Students will compose a page of sketches and notes, culminating in a botanical study. Together, we’ll cover examples of how to compose a page, and we’ll also explore basic techniques for adding watercolor and colored pencil. While the flowers we draw for this course will be cultivated flowers from the garden or store, we'll also discuss techniques for drawing wildflowers in the field.
This course is open to students of all skill levels; previous drawing experience is helpful but not necessary. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $50–$75 on these materials.

Fine Artist and Science Illustrator
Erin E. Hunter is a graduate of the science illustration program at UC Santa Cruz. She splits her time between fine art painting and technical illustrations for an academic journal, Annual Reviews. She has participated in group exhibitions at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, Denver Botanic Gardens, and elsewhere. Hunter recently had a solo show at the Monterey Museum of Art. She has also taught botanical illustration and field sketching at UC Santa Cruz and has illustrated four children’s books.
