Explore the hidden workings of the San Francisco art scene! This hands-on course combines classroom learning with guided visits to San Francisco’s leading fair and galleries. We’ll begin in the classroom with an overview of the American art market and its key actors and players. We will discuss how art fairs operate and what they reveal about market trends. Next, we’ll attend the FOG Design+Art Fair, where guided tours and conversations with gallery directors will highlight how the booths are curated and the artworks are highlighted. We’ll then visit the Minnesota Street Project. Getting acquainted with this San Francisco art hub will cement an understanding of how galleries operate, champion their artists, and engage with collectors. Our third on-site visit will include a private viewing at Fraenkel Gallery and a walk-through at the historic 49 Geary Street building, with its four floors of independently curated spaces. Our final session, back in the classroom, will focus on practical strategies for future art outings, making informed purchases, and, perhaps, discovering your next favorite artist.

Field trips:

FOG Design+Art Fair: Friday, January 23, Group 1: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm (PT); Group 2, 1:00 - 2:30 pm (PT)

Minnesota Street Project: Friday, January 30, Group 1: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm (PT); Group 2, 1:00 - 2:30 pm (PT)

Geary Street: Friday, February 6, Group 1: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm (PT); Group 2, 1:00 - 2:30 pm (PT)

Transportation and FOG Design+Art Fair ticket costs will be the responsibility of the student. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a ticket to the FOG Design+Art Fair in advance.
