¡Es hora de aprender español! Whether for business or pleasure, travel abroad, or a trip to the local market, millions of Americans have found Spanish so useful that it has become the nation’s most popularly studied second language. This course is designed to help build oral proficiency and comprehension, and to foster an understanding of the Spanish-speaking world and its language and cultures. By the end of the course, students will be able to converse on a basic level, to talk about themselves and their likes and dislikes, and to ask others about themselves. The course focuses on practical communication in a high-energy yet reassuring environment.This is the first course in a three-course sequence. The textbook assigned for this course will also be used for Levels II (Winter 2019) and III (Spring 2019). Students may enroll in this introductory course without intending to take all three courses in the sequence.

Vivian Brates, Lecturer in Spanish, Stanford

Vivian Brates received an MA from Georgetown in Latin American studies and an MA from UC Santa Barbara in Spanish and Latin American literature. She has volunteered for the Prison University Project teaching Spanish at San Quentin Prison, as well as the International Institute of the Bay Area preparing immigrants for their US citizenship exam. She has received awards for her work in community-engaged learning from Stanford’s Haas Center for Public Service and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
