In this course, we will learn about basic drawing tools (pencil, charcoal, and sumi ink and brush), and explore a variety of techniques such as crosshatching, gesture, gradation, and blending. We will also explore various kinds of subject matter, including still life, landscape, drapery, and abstraction, and cover the fundamentals of composition, contrast, and shading. One-on-one and group discussions will touch upon concepts crucial to the creative process, including synthesis, play, and the balance between structure and spontaneity. Technical demonstrations, slide lectures, and short writing projects will complement our studio work. The goal of this course is to give students the basic tools and ideas necessary to begin their own drawing practice within a convivial and relaxed community that encourages creativity.

This course is designed for beginners and those with minimal drawing experience. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $45–$65 on these materials.
