For those who want basic communication skills in Mandarin Chinese for travel, business, or everyday use, this course will teach you what you need to know. With an emphasis on conversation and an introduction to reading and writing simplified Chinese characters, the course focuses on the acquisition of fundamental communication skills. By the end of the quarter, students will be able to introduce themselves and meet others, name items in their immediate environment, and ask simple questions.

This is the first course in a three-course sequence. The textbook assigned for “Beginning Chinese I” will also be used for Levels II (Winter 2017) and III (Spring 2017). Students may enroll in this introductory course without intending to take all three courses in the sequence.

Xiaofang Zhou, Lecturer in Chinese, Stanford

Xiaofang Zhou has taught Mandarin Chinese at all levels at NYU, Princeton, and Columbia. Zhou received an MA from Beijing Language and Culture University.
