This course is designed for beginning photographers who would like to get the most out of their digital camera by utilizing the manual mode in their camera. The course will focus on the basics of photography, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure. Students will learn how to use the white balance and histogram, as well as different metering modes and exposure compensation. Students will also learn how to portray motion in their photos and how to give their images depth. In addition, the course will provide a workflow that takes students from planning and image capture to basic post-production. Students will be given weekly assignments that will build upon previous lessons. Images will be presented and critiqued during class. Students will learn the basics of good compositions and aesthetic principles and will be exposed to some important images and photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. By the end of the course, you will have a working knowledge of how to manage your digital photographs.

Students must have a camera that is capable of shooting in manual mode. Please bring your camera as well as the owner’s manual to all class sessions and field trips.

The course includes two field trips to local destinations. Field trip transportation will be the responsibility of the student.
