In this workshop, students will explore digital technologies used by Stanford medical students as they prepare for careers in the health sciences, and by surgeons in the treatment and care of patients. Though cadaver specimens are the foundation of instruction at Stanford, in this online version of the course, digital resources such as the Anatomage 3D Virtual Anatomy Dissection Table of cadaver material, 3D interactive anatomy apps of exceptional models, and digital diagnostic visualization systems provide the student and practitioner with data for visualizing the spatial relationships between anatomical structures and the full extent of specific anatomy that may be difficult to explore on the cadaver. Ultimately this leads to a better understanding of anatomy and improved patient care. Students will learn how to identify anatomical structures and common clinical conditions affecting the abdomen, such as inflammation of the gallbladder and appendix. Students will also observe, via videos, surgical procedures such as cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) and appendectomy. The workshop will begin with introductions followed by a digital presentation on the anatomy of the abdomen. Students will then observe the anatomy on the Anatomage 3D Virtual Anatomy Dissection Table and 3D interactive apps; questions from students will be encouraged. In the afternoon session, surgical procedures on the abdomen will be discussed; links to surgery videos will be posted for the students prior to the course. A short discussion period and concluding remarks will follow. The workshop will offer students an insight into the combination of anatomy resources and imaging that make learning anatomy at Stanford a unique experience.

This course is the second in a series on the clinical application of human anatomy titled “An Introduction to Anatomy at the Stanford School of Medicine.” Each course focuses on a different area—the upper limb (Fall 2020), the abdomen (Winter 2021), the urinary system (Spring 2021), and upper back and neck pain (Summer 2021). While these courses build upon one another, each course can be taken independently as well.

Miguel Angeles teaches anatomy to undergraduates, medical students, and physician assistant students. He emphasizes the clinical and surgical applications of anatomical principles by dissection and demonstration of surgical procedures using cadaveric specimens.
