Painting with acrylics offers us a flexibility unparalleled by other media. Acrylic paint can be manipulated to resemble everything from watercolor to oil paint to cement. In this introductory course, we will focus on skill-building with paintings that will help you feel confident in your approach to this medium. We will begin with interactive demonstrations of paint, painting setup, blending, and usage of different acrylic media, from slow dry to hard molding paste. Our first guided painting together will be abstract, allowing us to focus on composition, value, and color, and will be completed in one class session. In the next two paintings, we will break down technique into two areas: smooth, thin blending and loose, thick (impasto) application. In the first, we will paint a humble sphere (provided), using precision, and in the next, we will create a close crop of ocean waves in class, working more loosely. The final painting will be one of your choosing, with class and instructor feedback to help you select image and strategy, and time to work on these paintings in class together. Painting a subject that is personally meaningful to you can often dramatically boost your skills. For those who prefer prompts, the instructor will have many for you to choose from.

No previous painting or drawing experience is required. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $250–$550 on these materials.

Yvette Deas, Lecturer, Art & Art History, Stanford

Yvette Deas’s work focuses on the idiosyncratic and personal, and the metaphoric potential within the human form. She received an MFA from Stanford, as well as the Centennial Teaching Award. Her work was part of the traveling group exhibition “With Liberty and Justice for Some…,” most recently exhibited at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York. Her work can be viewed at yvettedeas.org.
