Is your painting practice stuck in low gear? Do you have an ambitious idea for a painting or series but aren’t yet sure how to pull it off? Would you thrive with the right combination of structure and the freedom to develop your own ideas? This course will offer the opportunity for individual attention, thoughtful discussion in small groups, and focused study in order to develop a group of paintings in the style and medium of your choice. Each student will propose three paintings early in the course and will develop them throughout the term. Students will receive personal feedback from the instructor focusing on composition, concept, and process, and helping them to elevate the strength and quality of their work. We will meet weekly, alternating between small-group sessions and meetings with the entire class. Students will be invited to interact in daily conversation by posting their progress on the course discussion boards. A final project will be complemented by optional assignments, tightly edited video demonstrations, and online resources curated to encourage experimentation and critical analysis. By the end of the course, students will have created paintings that showcase their progress in terms of process, practice, concept, and execution.

This course is open to students who work in any painting medium and style. It is designed for individuals who have some experience making art and who want to take their painting practice to the next level. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course, the cost of which will depend on students’ individual needs.
