Have you always wanted to play the guitar, but afraid it would be too hard to learn? This course, designed for novices, will help make guitar playing easy and fun. At a comfortable pace, students will learn basic chords and right-hand accompaniment patterns and apply these techniques to easy folk and popular songs—to songs written by Bob Dylan, Lennon and McCartney, Green Day, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, and others. The course will also lead students through a study of elementary music reading on the instrument. This will allow students to acquire basic musicianship skills with the goal of playing simple melodies on the guitar from standard musical notation. Students will learn how to pick up a piece of sheet music and follow its directions in terms of form, chord symbols, and meter. Toward the end of the course, students will form small groups in the class and play easy ensemble pieces together. Also covered will be how to tune with and without a guitar tuner, how to change a string, how to use a pick, and how and when to use a capo.

Students should bring their own acoustic guitar, tuner, and pick to class. This course will be repeated in Spring 2019 with new songs from influential artists, and the music reading component will also be repeated with new material. This will give the student, if continuing, an extra chance to reinforce the concepts learned while also letting new beginning students join the class.
