Is your painting practice stuck in low gear? Do you have an ambitious idea for a painting or series but aren’t yet sure how to pull it off? Would you thrive with the right combination of structure and the freedom to develop your own ideas? This course will offer the opportunity for individual attention, thoughtful discussion in small groups, and focused study in order to develop a group of paintings in the style and medium of your choice. Each student will propose three paintings early in the course and will develop them throughout the term. The instructor will give students personal feedback, focusing on composition, concept, and process and helping them to elevate the strength and quality of their work. We will meet weekly, alternating between small-group sessions and meetings with the entire class. Students will be invited to interact daily by posting their progress on the course discussion boards. A final project will be complemented by optional assignments, tightly edited video demonstrations, and online resources curated to encourage experimentation and critical analysis. By the end of the course, students will have created paintings that showcase their progress in terms of process, practice, concept, and execution.

This course is open to students who work in any painting medium and style. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course, the cost of which will depend on students’ individual needs.
