How do you know if you need an estate plan? What is an estate plan, anyway? Although we often hear that it is good to have a will or a trust, we may not know exactly why or where to begin. In this workshop, we will wind our way through stories and examples to show what wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives can do to help you plan for the future, and take care of yourself, your loved ones, and what you hold dear, whether it is your life savings, your home, or your book collection. You will come away knowing what issues may be lurking, what legal tools are available, and how to get started. Together, we will meet the Youthful Young family, the Wealthy Windsors, Single Sam, and Vicky the Vulnerable, among others. We will touch on sensitive topics in families, such as stepparents and stepchildren, in-laws, outlaws, and spendthrifts, and what you can do to preserve your legacy and minimize family strife after you are gone. You’ll learn the basics, too, such as what the various documents do, what estate tax actually is and whether you need to worry about it, and what decisions you need to make so that the estate planning process is quick and easy. Please note that this class will focus on domestic estate planning only and will not address international estate planning issues.

Grade restriction: NGR only; no credit/letter grade
