These days there are a variety of publishing opportunities for writers, from self-publishing to crowdfunded publishing to signing on with traditional, hybrid, or ebook-only publishers. This workshop provides an overview of the current book publishing industry, and then goes deeper to explore the pros and cons of each option. We will detail what really happens when you sign with a certain type of publisher or when you strike out on your own, and what your choice will mean in terms of cost, remuneration, and your own time. We will discuss strategies for finding an agent, hiring a copyeditor, choosing a book cover designer, and other tasks that may fall to an author. We will also look at book marketing and promotion, including what is expected of an author in the current marketplace and what an author can realistically expect a publisher to provide. Workshop participants will come away with a better understanding of each type of publishing option, what might be the best choice for you and your particular manuscript, and concrete advice on how to pursue that choice.
