There are thousands of print and digital magazines, and they all have one thing in common: they need writers. In this course, we will go step-by-step through the process of writing and publishing magazine articles, from idea to publication. Through lectures, discussions, activities, and weekly writing assignments, you will learn what it takes to be the kind of writer that editors want to work with. During this course, you will learn how to create and refine ideas, study a magazine, read submission guidelines, learn about the different types of articles, become familiar with submission etiquette, discover what to look for in contracts, learn how to write a query letter that gets assignments, and understand what makes a great article. As the course unfolds, there will be opportunities to get constructive critique and feedback on the assignments, which will include a query letter, a service piece, a profile, and a personal essay. When the course is completed, you will have the tools, knowledge, and understanding of how the magazine world works and be well on your way to seeing your byline on articles and getting paid for them.
