Establishing a voice that a child will find genuine involves more than discovering your own inner teenager or child. In this workshop, you will learn various techniques for crafting an authentic voice for young readers. We will complete several writing exercises that will help you explore your voice through a range of age levels. These exercises will be useful for any project you have under way, and also help target new ideas and directions for future work. We will look at several examples of award-winning and bestselling young adult and children’s authors such as Abby Hanlon, Christopher Paul Curtis, Jenny Downham, Nicola Yoon, and Sherman Alexie. We will study narrative voices that range from seven to seventeen years old. We will also experiment with a series of exercises designed to help you explore a range of young voices. Last, we will work on developing and polishing a pitch and description of your work that you can use when approaching agents and editors.
