If you’re a writer looking to be published, you know that the publishing industry is going through massive changes. Traditional publishers are taking fewer chances on emerging voices. And many smart writers are publishing their own work in print, ebook, and audiobook formats, and finding their readers through Amazon and similar online bookstores.

In this one-day workshop, we’ll walk through the process of self-publishing step by step. We’ll discuss how self-publishing differs from traditional publishing; the skills you need to produce a professional-quality book; the kinds of editors available; common mistakes in designing a book; elements of a powerful cover; pros and cons of CreateSpace, Kindle, IngramSpark, BookBaby, ACX, and other service companies; costs associated with self-publishing; royalties, ISBN numbers, rights, permissions, and other technical issues; difficulties in distributing to bookstores; ideas on getting reviews and testimonials; and social media strategies for promoting your work. By the end of the workshop, you will have a clear roadmap for publishing your own book.

Holly Brady, Former Director, Stanford Publishing Courses

Holly Brady spent over a decade at Stanford delivering courses on the future of publishing for working professionals from top publishing companies, including Random House, Time Inc., Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Newsweek, Chronicle Books, and John Wiley & Sons. She also launched the Stanford Writers Workshop. Earlier, she held senior editorial positions in magazine and book publishing. She currently works with entrepreneurial writers as a developmental editor and publishing strategist.
