Can you actually “self”-publish a book—that is, do it all yourself? Serious writers using self-publishing techniques tend to act more like independent filmmakers than self-publishers: They take on the role of creative director, bringing together their own skills with those of other professionals to produce a work of highest quality. In this workshop, we will walk through the process of self-publishing step by step, examining exactly what it takes to become the creative director of your own book project. We will discuss the skills you need to publish in hardcover, softcover, and ebook formats. We will cover the kinds of editors available to you; common mistakes in working with designers; elements of a powerful cover; and the pros and cons of Kindle Direct Publishing, IngramSpark, BookBaby, and other service companies. And we will dig into those knotty technical issues: costs, royalties, ISBN numbers, copyrights, permissions, difficulties in distributing to bookstores, and marketing ideas. By the end of the workshop, you will have a clear roadmap for publishing your own book.

Holly Brady, Former Director, Stanford Publishing Courses

Holly Brady spent over a decade at Stanford delivering courses on the future of publishing for working professionals from top publishing companies, including Random House, Time Inc., Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Newsweek, Chronicle Books, and John Wiley & Sons. She also launched the Stanford Writers Workshop. Earlier, she held senior editorial positions in magazine and book publishing. She works with entrepreneurial writers as a developmental editor and publishing strategist.
