Have you ever found yourself deep into writing a novel or screenplay only to discover that your story and characters feel disjointed and at odds? This is a common problem writers face when character and story development are approached as separate activities. This course seeks to integrate writing great characters with telling great stories by bringing together the Enneagram personality system and story structure best practices. Story structure underlies every story and is one of the most powerful tools any writer can learn. The Enneagram is the most influential model available today to describe the nine common personality styles of human thought, feeling, and action. Together they create the Enneagram-Story Connection, a powerful methodology that delivers not only characters who ring true, but also stories that work. Through weekly lectures, assigned reading, and analysis of well-known books and films such as The Great Gatsby and The Twilight Saga series, students will learn to apply the Enneagram-Story Connection to their stories. Using a set of provided tools for character and story development, students will construct essential story elements of their novels or screenplays. From compelling moral flaws to the best structure of the opposition and the creation of a solid story middle, with these tools students will create a roadmap for story development that can serve them through their entire writing process.

This is not a traditional workshop-style course. Students will not be working directly on stories or novel chapters but on development tools intended to help improve their novels and general storytelling.
