The gatekeepers of the film and television industries make up their minds about a script in its very first pages. Their decision is not simply based on whether the writing is compelling. Those first pages must not only charm, they must convince the reader that they are the foundation for a complete and deeply imagined world and the compelling characters within it. Whether you are new to screenwriting or already have a script underway, this course will help you achieve a great screenplay’s key objectives in an open and supportive workshop atmosphere. Through weekly writing exercises, you will learn how to introduce your main characters, set a tone, establish the rules of your fictional world, and hook your audience. We will dissect and discuss the scripts for North by Northwest and Parasite and the pilot scripts for Fargo and Big Little Lies, along with interviews with screenwriters and excerpts from The TV Writer’s Workbook and The Screenwriter’s Bible. Students will complete the course with a minimum of the first ten pages of a screenplay or pilot script, a one-line summary, and a toolbox of exercises and materials to help them complete the writing process.
Xandra Castleton’s scripts have been the basis for documentary, TV, and film projects, including a profile of the filmmaker John Waters, which received a regional Emmy award. Her films have been shown at the Sundance, Tribeca, AFI, and Rotterdam festivals. She co-wrote and produced the feature film Full Grown Men, which received the 2007 Sundance Channel Audience Award. Castleton is the co-creator and writer of the scripted TV documentary Stand Up Planet, hosted by Hasan Minhaj of Patriot Act.
