Online Writing Technology Questions
What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is an online learning system widely used by universities to offer courses
and degree programs to virtual student communities. Stanford痴 School of Education
currently uses Blackboard as an important component of its programs.
It is a mature product and a benchmark for distance learning software.
Which browser should I use?
We recommend using one of the following browsers to access Blackboard:
PC
- Mozilla Firefox
- Internet Explorer
|
|
Mac
|
Will I need to adjust my browser?
Generally, your browser should be configured to accept cookies, and Javascript
should be enabled. These are typical settings for Web programs that require
user log-in and offer personalized content. If your browser allows you to
select a Security level, Medium is usually the best choice.
Where can I find my User Name and Password?
Both your User Name and Password will be included in an instructional e-mail that you should receive a week before your course begins.
If for any reason you don't receive this e-mail, or misplace it, please
send us a message to that effect.
Why is my course password different from my CSP password?
Blackboard runs on a separate secure Web server that requires authenticated access.
That server痴 database, security and privacy rules prevent us from transferring your password.
How do I change my password?
You have been assigned a unique password. To change this, log in to Blackboard.
On the left side of your personal home page you値l see the
Tools navigation bar. Click on Personal Information and then
Change Password. You値l be taken to a page where you can submit your new password.
What if I misplace or forget my password?
Go to the log-in page.
Click on the Forgot your password? link. You will be presented with two options
to receive an e-mail message with instructions to change your password:
by entering your User Name or by entering your e-mail address.
How do I access my course?
Go to the log-in page.
Type in your User Name and Password, and then log in. Look for the course name under
My Courses.
How does the Chat feature work?
Once you池e logged in to your course you値l see Chat as one of the choices
in a navigation bar on the left side. When you click on Chat you値l see a
page called Collaboration Sessions. Clicking the Join button for Lightweight
Chat will open a window where you値l see icons representing you and any other
participants. You will then be able to chat in real time. Click your name to
highlight it if there are other participants.
What if the Chat Window fails to appear?
-
The Chat Window is a JavaApplet Window that uses Java 2 Standard Edition.
Most computers ship with Java installed but you might have to upgrade to the
current version. Go to http://www.java.com and you値l see a link to download
the latest version.
-
The Chat Window may launch behind your internet browser window. Try minimizing all other windows or
applications that you have running on your computer to see if this occurred.
-
If you have Java installed and the Chat Window did not launch behind your internet browser, try logging
out of your course completely and then logging back in. If the Chat Window still fails to appear,
email hutchins@stanford.edu.
What if I'm having difficulties with Login, the Forum, or any other Blackboard function?
Due to the complex interaction between the Blackboard software and all the various browsers and platforms,
it's often a good idea
1.) to clear the cache on your browser and
2.) to restart your computer.
Clearing the cache and restarting the computer resolve ninety percent of all technical problems.
