Tuition, Payment and Refund FAQs

Tuition is indicated with each course description. Courses are offered only for the number of units listed, and all fees must be paid in full at the time of registration, either by credit card or personal check. Cash cannot be accepted. If your check is returned for any reason, a $55 service fee will be charged.

What is the registration fee?
The registration fee is charged once per quarter, per student, regardless of the number of courses and events you enroll in. The registration fee is $30 until the registration deadline, and $45 after it. The registration deadline varies by quarter, so please view the calendar for this and other important dates.

Please note that all tuition and fees up to $100 are not subject to the registration fee. Only totals of $101 or more will incur the registration fee.

Does Continuing Studies offer any tuition assistance or discounts?
Continuing Studies offers the following discounts and tuition assistance:
  • Stanford University Employees: Employees who work 50%-time or more may apply up to the full $800 of their academic year allocation of STAP funds towards tuition and registration fees. Stanford staff may use STAP funds for any Continuing Studies course without supervisor's approval. STAP funds for the year begin with Fall quarter registration (they are counted towards the quarter you take the course).
  • Stanford Medical Center Employees: Employees who work 50%-time or more at Stanford Hospital & Clinics or Lucile Packard Children's Hospital receive a 20% tuition discount. Note: discount does not apply if using Hospital tuition funds.
  • Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) members: Discount of $40 per course, up to two courses per calendar year.
  • Stanford University faculty and matriculated students: 20% tuition discount.
  • Age 65+: 20% tuition discount.
  • Educators: 20% tuition discount to certified educators teaching in Bay Area schools.

Discounts apply only to tuition, and only one discount per student is allowed. Discounts do not apply to courses with tuition under $100.

How can I drop a course?
You have until 5:00 p.m. on the day before the third class meeting to drop your course and receive a refund. All drop requests must be submitted in writing, by email (continuingstudies-drop@stanford.edu), fax (650-725-4248), or in person. You can also drop a course in the MyCSP section for an automatic tuition refund. Dropping a course is the responsibility of the student; notifying an instructor of your desire to drop is not sufficient notice. Please note that some workshops may have special refund deadlines. Special deadlines will be indicated in the course description. Any event or course with tuition of $100 or less is non-refundable.

Will I receive a refund if I drop my course?
In order to be granted a full tuition refund, you must cancel your registration in MyCSP or in writing by 5:00 p.m. on the day before the third class meeting. The registration fee and course fees are non-refundable.

How and when will I be refunded if I drop a course?
Please allow 2-3 weeks to process refunds unless you drop in MyCSP which generates an automatic tuition refund. You will be refunded in the same manner that you paid (i.e., either credit card or check), and you will receive a letter when the refund is complete, detailing the amount, date, and manner of the refund. Check refunds take up to six weeks to process, due to Stanford's check requesting system.

What if I need to drop a course after the refund deadline?
After the deadline, no refunds will be given unless the course is cancelled by CSP. You may still drop the course, however, and it will not appear on transcripts.
