Grades, Credit and Certificates FAQs

What are the grade options?
You may choose to take a course for a Letter grade or Credit/No Credit (CR/NC), or you may choose No Grade Requested (NGR). If you select either Letter grade or CR/NC, you will be required to do written work for the course. Both Letter grade and CR/NC will earn the number of units associated with the course. If you choose NGR, you will still be expected to participate fully in all in-class activities, but you will not be required to complete any written work. You will also not earn any units if you choose NGR.

The NGR grade option is the default. Please be certain to change your grade option to either letter grade or CR/NC if you plan to do the written work. You will receive a grade of "NP" (not passed) if you do not do the written work, but have selected either letter or CR/NC.

Please note: If your instructor has chosen "Inst CR/NC" as the grade option for your course, all students will be graded on a credit or no credit basis unless you change your grade option to "No Grade Requested (NGR)." In other words, letter grades are not available and CR/NC or NGR are the only two options available once your instructor has chosen this grade system.

When can I change my grade option?
You may change your grade option any time up to and including the final class meeting. You may not change your grade option after the course has ended.

How can I change my grade option?
You must notify us in writing. This can be done by email (continuingstudies@stanford.edu); by fax (650-725-4248), by mail or in person (482 Galvez St.; Stanford, CA 94305-6079); or in the MyCSP section. Grade option forms are available in the Continuing Studies office.

Do I still need to pay if I choose not to do written work?
Yes. NGR is a grade option in Stanford Continuing Studies, not a payment option. You are still required to pay for each course in which you enroll.

When will I receive my grades?
Please allow approximately one month after the course ends for your grades to arrive. Continuing Studies attempts to get all grades turned in by instructors within two weeks after the final class meeting. Our staff will mail grade reports to students within two weeks of receiving the instructor's grade sheet.

Are these college credit courses?
Yes, you can earn from 1-3 quarter units on our undergraduate-level courses. However, acceptance of these units is at the discretion of the institution to which you wish to transfer them. Please contact the registrar of the institution to which you wish to transfer Continuing Studies units to determine whether they will accept them.

Can I earn any kind of certification?
Yes, Continuing Studies students who have completed at least 18 units are eligible to receive a certificate of completion. A majority of the courses (12 units) must be taken for a letter grade. You must earn a "B-" or higher in letter-graded courses, and a "CR" or "Inst S" in all other courses. To request a certificate of completion, please contact our office.

Note: the certificate of completion is not a professional certificate, nor a degree certificate. It is meant as a "thank you" to our most faithful students. Stanford Continuing Studies does not offer certificates of completion for individual courses. We do not offer any degrees, except through the Master of Liberal Arts program, which requires a separate admission process. To learn more about the MLA program, please visit their website.

How can I request a CSP transcript?
Official transcripts for Stanford Continuing Studies students are free of charge, but must be requested in writing. Please mail or fax your request to the Continuing Studies office, or email continuingstudies-transcript@stanford.edu. We attempt to maintain a 72-hour turnaround to process your request.

How can I request an EPGY transcript?
