This course will cover the basic principles and techniques of black-and-white photography, its history, and its aesthetics. Subject areas to be included are photographic materials, cameras and optics, and image making. Students will learn how to meter, expose, and process black-and-white materials. The course will provide demonstrations of developing and printing, lectures on photographers’ work, and constructive critiques of student work.
Please bring a manual 35mm camera and a small picture (or photocopy of a snapshot) to the first class. This course also includes two Saturday darkroom sessions.
Lukas Felzmann, Lecturer in Art & Art History
Lukas Felzmann received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. His photography has been shown nationally and internationally in both individual and group shows at the Friends of Photography, Headlands Center for the Arts, Fotomuseum Winterthur, SFMOMA, and elsewhere. His published work includes Landfall and Waters in Between. He was recently included in the exhibition, From Their Studios, at the Cantor Arts Center.
