Poetry: Writing the Moment (Online Course) (EGL 287 W)
Robert Lowell said, "Poetry is not the record of an event, it is an event." In this course we will learn what makes a poem come alive, how a poem is made, and how we begin to write one. Emphasis is placed on getting started, developing ideas, and learning how to shape a poem once it has gotten to the page. In the spirit of exploration, weekly creative assignments and spontaneous writing prompts will lead to the creation of original poems, which students will submit for supportive group discussion. To increase our understanding of the tools and resources available to us, part of the course will be dedicated to the study of contemporary authors. This course is well-suited for those new to poetry, and for experienced writers who are looking to experiment with diverse approaches to their writing.
Please note: This is an online course.
