Novel Writing: The Powerful Beginning (Online Course) (EGL 134 W)

If you want to write a novel but are unsure how to sustain a piece of long fiction, then this three course series is for you. In the Fall, Malena Watrous, author of the forthcoming novel, Repeat After Me, will teach “Novel Writing: The Powerful Beginning,” helping students to create the foundations—strong opening chapters and outlines—for their new books in the making. In the Winter, Katharine Noel, author of the acclaimed novel, Halfway House, will pick up with “Continuing Your Novel,” designed to get students over the hump and to deepen their awareness of the craft of novel writing. In the Spring, Watrous will return to teach the final course in the series, helping students to visualize an ending and write toward that goal. In all three courses, close readings of published novels, regular deadlines and critical feedback, and short assignments serve as rest stops, refreshing you on the long journey toward your completed novel.

Novel Writing: The Powerful Beginning

Maybe you’ve always wanted to write a novel, but have been unsure how to launch into what can seem a daunting task. Maybe you love to read novels and you wonder what it would be like to try writing one. Maybe you have even started one and then gotten stuck. This course will provide you with the guidance and feedback that will help you create a sturdy launching platform for your novel. You will read several highly esteemed contemporary novels to observe and discuss how these published authors made the same kinds of choices that you will be making in your own book. You will receive weekly writing prompts to illuminate novel writing techniques. Most important, you will complete and workshop an opening chapter of fifteen to thirty pages, and you will create an outline or working structure to help you continue writing with purpose after the course ends.

Please note: This is an online course.
