Course Description

Crafting Autobiographical Fiction: Truth and Imagination (Online Course) (EGL 256 W)
How do fiction writers use memory in order to deepen their work and give it a touch of reality? In this online course, we will explore how to integrate elements of autobiography into fiction. Students will present a piece of their own writing and receive supportive and honest feedback. We will also do writing exercises that use memory and autobiography to inspire new works or deepen older ones. In addition to reading published short stories and novel chapters, we will read interviews with writers about how their writing overlaps with, or diverges from, their lives. Whether you are writing fiction that is very close to your personal history, or just interested in exploring how memory and observation can enrich your writing, this course will provide you with ideas for taking your work to the next level.

Created in close partnership with the Stanford Creative Writing Program, this online course will be useful for students looking to improve their craft. Because this course can be taken anywhere, anytime, it is designed to be attractive to those students who live far from campus, or who lead busy lives and can benefit from the flexibility of the online format.
