Creative Nonfiction for Magazines (Online Course) (EGL 254 W)
Book publication is most memoirists' goal, but there are lucrative magazine markets for other kinds of creative nonfiction, including those devoted to everything from hiking to gardening, yachting, travel, fitness, and other pursuits. The writer who can lift such articles above the plane of journalismby presenting narrative and useful information as adventures of the human mind and heartwill find favor with editors. In this online course, students will examine and discuss the craft of writing a variety of creative nonfiction magazine articles. By the end of the course they will have written and revised a ten- to fifteen-page article of their own. In addition, through a series of shorter written exercises, we will strive to write prose that is both vivid and resonant. We will also discover how the description and narration of any activitywhen it is presented with imagination and passioncan scale the crystal battlements of meaning and enthrall editors and audience alike.
Please note: This is an online course.
