Creative Nonfiction (Online Course) (EGL 122 W)
The fastest-growing field in contemporary writing, creative nonfiction, is an umbrella term for memoir, travel writing, biography, science writing, nature writing, personal essays, and other genres. Often, a single work of creative nonfiction will draw from several of these forms, as well as from the dramatic and lyric arts. In this course, we will read published work by established and not-so-established writers, as well as an essay or book chapter submitted by each student. All work— student and published—will be read in the same way, with careful, critical enthusiasm. There are no rules to creative nonfiction, but we will explore some of the organizing principles of this form.

In the first half of this course, we will develop our understanding of the form and explore certain issues of ethics and craft particular to it. In the second half, we will turn our sharpened critical eyes toward our own work. “Each man bears the entire form of Man’s estate,” said Michel de Montaigne. We will look to published and student work to see whether he is right.

Please note: This is an online course.
