Course Description

Communication: The Heart of Parenting (COM 35)
At the core of good parenting is the ability to create open communication in order to convey your love, stay alert to children’s changing needs, and navigate inevitable conflicts. This course utilizes techniques drawn from a popular Graduate School of Business course on effective interpersonal skills and applies them to the process of parenting. The focus is not on child-rearing topics, but rather on honing your ability to inquire about and respond to feelings with ease. Doing so will encourage and teach children to share their feelings directly, help you hear each other and find common ground. We will create a safe small-group setting to share honest feedback about the impact and effectiveness of your words and behavior on others. You can then experiment with different approaches in the class before using them with your children. Learning will depend upon active participation and a willingness to be honest with yourself and others.

Update: This course is intended for parents whose children are school aged—pre-school through college. Our work will be enhanced by having a diversity of parenting experience.

Class schedule:
6 Wednesdays, October 8 - November 12, 7 - 10pm
2 Saturdays, October 25 and November 8, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

This course will be offered Credit/No Credit only.
