The Real World of "Viral" Video and Social Networking (COM 31)
The Internet has evolved to the point where a video clip has sufficient influence to end the career of a powerful senator, where a single Web page can generate $4 million in a day for a presidential candidate, and where a funny home video of two kids in a chair can become a phenomenon that reaches millions worldwide.

This course will explore two major factors—evocation and infrastructure—that allow online video and features of social networking to exert profound influence on politics, business, and everyday life. Students will work in small groups to create videos that promote a cause, educate an audience, or sell an idea. Access to infrastructure of an early stage Web 2.0 startup will enable each group to distribute its videos, collect data, and assess the "viral impact" of its campaigns. For the purposes of this course a "video" can be as simple as something captured by a cell phone or as sophisticated as an edited production. The final class session will review all of the campaigns, gauging their effectiveness and comparing lessons learned. What makes one video go viral and another not? We will take a look and see for ourselves.
