Writing and Talking Science: Clear Communication for Scientists (COM 15)
Effective and clear communication is one of the most daunting challenges facing scientists today. Recent estimates indicate that nearly half of the manuscripts submitted to science journals, and even more grants submitted to funding agencies, are rejected or delayed because they are poorly written. And many talks by scientists are poorly received because the scientists have not learned how to effectively communicate with their peers and the public. At all stages of their careers, scientists continue to struggle with communicating their scientific messages, and there are few resources available to them to learn these vital skills.

In this course, we will examine the most common problems facing scientists in communicating their messages through different venues: research and clinical manuscripts, oral presentations, posters, research grants, and more. Through lectures, group discussions, and thought-provoking exercises, students will learn effective written and oral communication skills. Scientists and teachers in the fields of biology, medicine, chemistry, and the life sciences will benefit from this unique course.
