The Digital Library and its (Dis)Contents (CLS 76)
In late 2004, Google unveiled its plan to scan and index the print collections of five major research libraries, including Stanfords. This plan was variously described as a noble endeavor, a moon shot, defiant, and massively infringing. A few years and several million digital tomes later, its digitization efforts (and the surrounding media attention) continue apace. But Googles digital library is far from the first: Stanfords own digital library efforts pre-date Googles by at least twenty years, and the application of computers to textual studies began just after World War II.
In this course we will examine the theory, history, and present state of the digital library, speculate on its future possibilities, and critically engage the ideas of enthusiasts, naysayers, and creators of digital libraries. We will examine both the metaphors that shape our understanding of the digital library, and the more down-to-earth legal, economic, and technological questions it raises. We will also do hands-on, experimental work with digital library collections to reveal some of their remarkable possibilities and potential pitfalls, and we will look behind the scenes of many of Stanfords own rich digital library environments. Guest speakers include representatives of Stanfords Office of the General Counsel and the Google Books Project.
