Paris Transforming (CLS 75)
In this entertaining and provocative course, artist and performer Leonard Pitt will share his research on Paris and how that grand city has been transformed over the centuries. The five lectures will cover different aspects of the city's evolution: its origins under the Romans 2,000 years ago; the work of Baron Haussmann in the 19th century when much of the citys medieval and Renaissance fabric was demolished to create the modern city; and the drama of Paris trying to adapt to notions of Modernism in the period following World War II as exemplified by plans to raze the Marais. Perhaps most curiously, we will explore how large swaths of the city were laid out not as a result of a reasoned process of deliberation, but rather as a result of raw violent emotion, as seen in the Louvre, Place des Vosges, and Palais Royal. Each lecture will be amply illustrated with slides.
