Course Description

A Gentle Introduction to Chemistry (CHEM 11)
Chemistry is all around us, from the food we eat to the cars we drive and the products we buy. There is chemistry in the air, in the ground, in the oceans, in the ice of the Antarctic, and in the volcanoes of Hawaii. There is chemistry on other planets and on the Sun. At the most basic level, relatively few elements combine in different ways to create most of the tangible matter of the universe.

This course is designed for inquisitive individuals who want to understand the avalanche of chemistryrelated information that affects us all. It is for students who feared chemistry in school, or are concerned that it is too difficult to understand. During these five weeks, we will explore the periodic table of elements, and the composition of minerals, air, water, and other planets and stars. We will learn about the nature of chemical bonding, intermolecular interactions, and chemical reactions. Classes will include lectures, video clips of chemical experiments, in-class discussions, and optional homework assignments.
