Your Genetic Future: The Human Genoma Project Explored (BIO 76)
If you could pick the gender or eye color of your next baby, would you? Would you want to know if you have the gene for Alzheimer’s disease? Thanks to the $3 billion, 13-year, international Human Genome Project which completed a draft genome sequence in 2001, it is now possible to do these things… and much more. DNA is the blueprint that makes us who we are as human beings. However, the meaning of this blueprint is only now becoming understood. Join us in this course to learn what DNA is, how its sequence determines how we look and act, and how science and medicine are starting to use this knowledge. Students will learn the remarkable story of the Human Genome Project; tour a Stanford DNA sequencing lab; learn about new efforts to discover more genetic traits and prevent/treat genetic diseases; and consider the moral and ethical implications of this revolutionary new field of science.

Please note: This course is now 7 weeks (September 24 - November 5). The schedule and tuition have been updated.

David Johnson
Director of Research and Development, Gene Security Network
David Johnson received a PhD in Genetics from Stanford and later was a project director in Stanford's Human Genome Center. He recently published two papers in Science, one of which outlined an invention for a new way of quantifying DNA-protein interactions. That article prompted one of the reviewers to write that the invention "dramatically changes how fundamental questions of biology are addressed." Johnson is currently Director of Research and Development at Gene Security Network, a local genetics startup.
