The Great Overlooked Diseases and What We Can Do About Them (BIO 75)
Some of the worst diseases (in terms of real human costs) are ones that you’ve likely never heard of before. Parasitic protozoa and worms infect billions of humans, causing millions of deaths each year, mainly among the poor in developing countries. And it is precisely because these diseases occur in developing nations that they are neglected.

This course will survey these overlooked diseases, explaining how people become infected and where these diseases occur. The course will also address complex sociological, health policy, and social justice issues. We will explore the relationship among poverty, overpopulation, and prevalence of parasitic disease. We will investigate why we have not used readily available tools to bring these diseases under control; why pharmaceutical companies are not working harder to develop effective drugs; and what should be the role of the US government (and, for that matter, the World Health Organization and even the Gates Foundation) in combating these diseases. This course will raise awareness of neglected parasitic diseases, formidable challenges faced in controlling them, and what we can do about them.
