Europe in the Age of the Cathedrals: Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (ARTH 219)
This course will explore the painting, sculpture, and architecture of the Middle Ages, from the earliest Christian frescoes in the Roman catacombs through the construction of the soaring cathedrals of Chartres, Amiens, and Beauvais, and will end with the onset of the Black Death in the 1340s. The centuries following the collapse of Roman authority in Italy and Gaul and the destructive Gothic and Lombard invasions witnessed the spread of Christianity to the farthest reaches of the European continent as well as the political, economic and cultural transformation of Western civilization. The new world that emerged during the so-called Dark Ages was in many ways vastly different from Roman antiquity, and yet there was a surprising degree of continuity with the ancient past, especially in the visual arts. In this course, there will be particular emphasis on the great masterpieces of the Carolingian and Ottonian Empires, the Romanesque and Gothic periods, and the Italian peninsula at the dawn of the Renaissance.
